Introduction of the Interim Rector

The Rev. Jeanie Martinez-Jantz

Reverend Martinez-Jantz is a second-career priest who came to ordained ministry after a career in broadcast journalism. She moved from Florida to the DC metro area in 2004 to attend Virginia Theological Seminary. She was ordained in January 2008.

Rev. Martinez-Jantz is no stranger to transition.  She has lived in four different states and began the process to ordained ministry the Sunday before her parish priest announced his retirement.  She served as assistant rector at a large suburban church through the retirement of one rector, and into the tenure of his successor.
Since her ordination, she has served in several posts, assisting with transitional ministry. She served as a youth minister at Leeds Episcopal Church in Markham, Va., leading the youth group on their first mission trip.   Next, she served as assistant rector at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Burke, VA., just before and following the retirement of their long term rector. She also served as acting interim rector while the parish underwent their search for an interim and has observed first-hand the search process and installation of a new rector. She also served as priest associate at Church of the Epiphany in Herndon, Va and as interim rector at Olivet Episcopal Church in Alexandria, Va.
Reverend Martinez-Jantz was born in Oklahoma, where she lived with her Mennonite grandparents when she was very young.  They gave her a love of the Bible and of biblical stories.  They also nurtured in her a strong faith and an enduring relationship with Jesus.  After her parents’ divorce, Jeanie moved with her mother to North Carolina, where she attended North Carolina State University, graduating with a degree in History.  After graduation she moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, and began her career as a television news photographer.  While at WPEC-TV she received two Florida Emmy Nominations, met and married Carlos Martinez, and began a family.
Carlos and Jeanie divorced in 2010.  Jeanie now lives in Alexandria with her younger daughter, Alex (Alexandra), who graduated from University of Missouri last December.  Her elder daughter, Melissa, is married to Eric Rosenberg and lives in Lexington Park, MD.  She was the celebrant at Melissa’s wedding last September.  She considers that to be one of many blessings of her ordained ministry.
Rev. Jantz is a fellow of Deep Calls to Deep, a fellowship program for developing excellence in preaching in the Episcopal Church.  She is also a graduate of the Academy of Biblical Storytelling, and member of the Network of Biblical Storytellers (NBS).  The NBS is dedicated to reviving the oral tradition of “telling” biblical passages rather than reading them. She is looking forward to developing that ministry during her time at St Timothy’s. She is also exploring the possibility of working on a Doctorate of Ministry in Biblical Storytelling.
